I recently took fourth place in the masters 50+ at the Excalibur in culver city. I am 52 years old! I am thrilled to have placed in a fierce show as my competition was very worthy!! Those fifty year olds were HOT!

I met Nancy in 2008. I had become interested in competing. I had gotten into working out and had lost some weight. I had done a show prior to meeting Nancy. I was TERRIBLE. To stringy, awkward, and not very confident! I had never done anything like this! They had nothing like this when I was younger… I married young got into my hairdressing career and I am mother of a son and daughter that are now grown. I currently own my own hair salon. I had always loved challenges and the thought that competing, the pretty suit (with bling no doubt) the cut body, grace and poise intrigued me! So I signed up!

I did 2 more shows and Nancy guided me! She literally taught me how to walk in the heels, how to eat. She monitored my diet, my posing and would listen to me weekly…. I had many insecurities. I learned SO much. She counseled me…. Helped me with confidence building. I felt like a fish out of water, yet I was VERY determined! I didn’t place in either show…. Still had work to do! Little did I know, the lessons I would learn were more than placing in any competition. They were lessons I used to get me through the biggest challenge of my life.

That year I was in the BEST shape! My diet was clean! I continued my workouts and my healthy lifestyle. I knew I had more work to do as far as competing. Life was busy. That September life as I knew it changed. My 23 year old daughter had a lump on her neck. It was thyroid cancer. She had surgery to remove her thyroid and currently is doing fantastic. The end of the year came and I saw my mother that Christmas for the last time as I always had known her. She became I’ll and two days later went to the hospital where she would spend her last 6 weeks. If life was not stressful enough I went in for my yearly mammogram that January. February 2, 2009 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mom died on the 7th. I underwent a mastectomy . I felt numb. I learned the week after the surgery that the cancer (stage 2) had traveled to my lymphatic system. Damn it…. I had to have chemotherapy. As part of my treatment. It was determined I would have four rounds! (I was again lucky)

Oh no!!! I was about to lose my HAIR! And I did! Very humbly. Well I’m here to tell you the lessons!!! A healthy lifestyle is your best friend. I worked out all the way through! At least if it was only cardio. I couldn’t do upper body for some time so I did what I could. I put my do rag on and dragged my butt to the gym everyday! I was VERY lucky. The chemo didn’t make me physically sick. They have wonderful anti nausea medications that worked well for me. I kept up with my diet by eating clean. It wasn’t easy but doable. I had to keep my salon running. No disability for self employed people. I bought wigs that were cute. Not fun to be bald and be a hairdresser. I sucked it up. Oh believe me, I cried MANY tears. I’ve always been a bit competitive and I wasn’t going to let cancer win if I had ANY control at all!

Time has passed! Just about 3 years! After treatment I went through another year of reconstructive surgery! I’ve learned time is your friend! Hair grew back. I have reconstructive new breasts! I am happy to now be competing in figure! I’m a lot calmer about being on stage now! I still am working on stage fright! But through the journey I’m able to accept myself better. I’m not nearly as hard on myself. Yes, I’m still working on that walk! Always trying to improve! But I wear my scares with pride. Those scares represent life! New beginnings! To me life is about reinventing and NEVER giving up!!

Nancy had written….sometimes when you win, you lose–and sometimes, when you lose–you win! I really get that now. Sometimes good things come in not so pretty packages. That’s how I feel about my cancer. I’ve really learned so much about the human spirit! If there is something you want to do… DO it! The sky is still the limit as long as you accept yourself and work hard! My key for success is my healthy lifestyle. Nancy, my coach is a very strong lady. She has helped me to accept myself! She is STRONG and supportive. I’m happy to know her! Well a new year is upon us! Thinking about doing a few more shows! And my new goal is…. Have some fun with it!!!!

More testimonials for my newest eBook

I had the pleasure of working with Nancy Georges as I was prepping for a show in 2010and reading this book made me feel like Nancy was right there with me once again; walking me through the dieting basics and helping me to mentally balance myself and overcome my body image issues.

This book is not only a healthy and detailed guideline for how and what to eat but it challenges us to evaluate ourselves to get to the heart of our goals and body image. The most powerful section to me was the part that asked “do you think it’s possible to be happy and strong and beautiful without having to look a certain way”. What a great question to ask oneself and a great way to delve into yourself and understand your own issues that are holding back positive self thought. When I got to the part that suggested making a list of goals that have nothing to do with looks, it hit home. I struggle with my body image constantly although I am healthier now than I have ever been. But having a book on hand that I can go to and re-read and reinforce the positive thinking and realizations that I have had is so valuable. Many things I read were exactly what I needed to hear, and I’ve done 3 shows! I can imagine how insightful it would be to someone who has never worked with Nancy personally.

This book is motivating and uplifting and I love how it differentiates between lifestyle and diet. Working with Nancy she would always tell me that maintenance CAN be progress and that maintenance IS success. Maintenance is your lifestyle which is something I didn’t understand. I had a hard time coming off contest diets and going into a lifestyle because I felt it was all or nothing as far as food and eating. This book clearly defines the difference, the uses for each and what types of food are needed. I feel like I can turn to this book at any time either before or after a contest to get some refreshers to keep me mentally healthy.

Another thing I enjoyed is how much this book relates to the struggles the majority of women have in comparing themselves to other women and their own body image issues. I feel like this book gave me the tools to work through those issues in a positive and proactive way. If I feel like I’m having a moment of weakness or feeling negative thoughts, I can turn to the book and find the appropriate chapter and feel the motivation wash over me. Reading Nancy’s experiences in print modeling and her suggestion of saying to yourself “I want to look like her but with my structure” really puts body image in perspective. So many times I’ve compared myself to other women whom I will never look like because our genetics are different and I’ve fought many internal battles berating myself that I was a failure because I could never attain a certain look. I have learned that I can’t be someone I’m not. I can’t be 6ft tall no matter how hard I try. But I can look my best for MY body and that’s what this book teaches.

Thank you Nancy for writing a book that felt like it was designed just for me and for the issues I am facing!

Nicole Snell

Testimonials for The Dieter's Guide To Successful Self Coaching

I thought it was a good idea. I thought that people needed the information, but I was not really sure until I started receiving orders for the eBook the very first day, and getting feedback and testimonials right away. I am so thrilled to have created an eBook with valuable information that will help people to help take control of their own fitness program in a way that works best for them. Here is what Jen has to say about The Dieter’s Guide To Successful Self Coaching:

As I was reading the book, I kept thinking to myself ‘did she write this AFTER talking to me??’ I’m sure I won’t be the only person who thinks this. If you’ve ever struggled with your self-esteem or a diet, then this book is right up your ally and you will be thinking the same thing I did…”how does she know what I’m thinking?!” What I loved most about reading this book is that it’s totally straightforward, no nonsense. It’s just like when you talk to or work with Nancy; laid back, but absolutely to the point.

This book is full of things that you know, but that you just ignore. It’s good to be reminded, and put the tips to use. I know the things I’ve been doing are not working for a reason…I’m ignoring what I know. But after reading this book, it has reminded me of things that were effective for me in the past, and I will be utilizing again.

Nancy makes many great points, two of my favorites are ‘use yourself as a role model’ and ‘visualize.’ I’m so happy I read this book, and to have refreshed my memory on what works and why. It was a fast easy read and helped reaffirm my motivation. Thank you Nancy!

Jen Rish
Sherman Oaks, CA

New eBook- The Dieter's Guide To Successful Self Coaching

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 175px; height: 245px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H4STmWd5ac4/Tg0M372-2QI/AAAAAAAAADA/bArLeE7kCyg/s400/guidehome.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624165664756259074" />I am very excited about my newest eBook: The Dieter's Guide To Successful Self Coaching. I have been coaching for many years and one of the things that I stress to my clients is being self sufficient. What is at stake here, is our futures! The future of food is at risk. You might think I am kidding, I could hardly believe it myself when I first learned of the news I am about to share with you, and maybe you already know.

As fitness enthusiasts we are deeply concerned with the ingredients we put into our bodies. Admittedly often times it is for appearance's sake rather than for the sake of our health. But the fact remains, being healthy is a wonderful byproduct of our obsessive focus on looking good.

Do you remember the moment that you realized there was no such thing as Santa Clause? (don't let your kids read this) Your hopes and dreams of the man watching your every move and showering you with gifts based on your naughty or niceness shattered. You know the feeling you get when you think the world is one way and you find out the truth of the way that it actually is?

Recently I have been hit with such a blow. Now I am not a political activist, or a tree hugging granola type. But recently I have been informed of a truth that is so big I can hardly believe that being a fitness professional and a food nutritionist that I was not aware of it. This hard truth is that of genetically modified foods. When I first heard someone yammering on about it, I brushed them off. I thought, ok, here is one more complainer who just can't seem to be happy in life looking for something to cry about. But two movies changed my mind completely and they are Food Inc. and The Future of Food. Both movies speak about genetically modified food and the power that Monsanto has over our entire corn and soy industry (for now) by our government giving them a patent on genetically modified corn and soy. They have other patents pending on food. One company has a patent on a terminator gene that will chemically modify the seed so that once it is planted only once, the seed will die. Now the problem with patenting corn is that you know how seeds spread? Well if you are a farmer and somehow this genetically modified seed gets into your crops, then guess who is going to get sued? That is right, you the farmer. Unspeakable! Farmers are being sued for their crops being infested with genetically modified corn. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

I will hope that you will watch both of these movies for several reasons. What we eat has been packaged to look pretty, but the way it is processed is nothing but pretty. For example, they throw cute little chicks and put them in a dark room for 40 days and feed them as much as they can, with no light and they are all on top of each other, and of course guess what they are eating? That's right, gmo corn. The cows too. They actually cut openings in the side of the cow so they can see the cows digest their food to make sure they don't have ecoli bacteria. I will leave my story at that, and if you are compelled to watch either movie, please do so.

My take away from these movies was one very strong statement, that being when we think that we can do nothing about something, such as the case with Monsanto and any other company that gets a patent on genetically modified food for that matter, when we go to the store, we are voting. When we buy from our local farmers market and local butcher that raises free range chickens and grass fed cows, we are voting. We can make a difference by being more aware of what we are putting into our bodies and demanding to know the truth before we just blindly eat without thinking of the consequences. There was a powerful statement in the end of The Future of Food where the narrator said: "It is up to you." It gave me goose bumps, knowing that I do have the power, and have choice. I take that very seriously, and I hope you will too.

www.thefutureoffood.com
www.foodincmovie.com

NEW- Releasing The Diet Drama- Hypnosis Session

CLICK FOR INFO

Hi Everyone! Indeed positive self talk and will power are important, however the problem with will power alone is that it does not sustain itself over time and automatically. In the fight between will power and imagination, imagination will always win. When you say a positive affirmation to yourself that you don't truly believe you are subconsciously saying to yourself something to the effect of "who are you kidding, you can't really do this" but you keep saying to yourself that you can, this in and of itself will prove to be a futile effort. That is why when using will power alone to stay on a diet, it will necessarily fail. So what can you do to make all of those dreams of yours a reality? Here is how:

The way to reprogram your subconscious mind is by utilizing positive imagery that has an emotional charge. Using your imagination, and creativity along with setting realistic goals that create gradual change over time, you will no longer be monkeying inside of your mind with mental jargons of self doubt. When you find yourself doubting yourself, take a step back and focus on a smaller more realistic goal for the time being, keep in mind the long term goal that you will eventually achieve. This will set yourself up for creative imaginative thoughts that will inspire you and get you to where you are going.

In the case of health and fitness, for example don't focus on the foods that you cannot eat, focus on the goals that you have of why it is so important for you to look and feel a certain way. If you are still not inspired, you need to work on the dream, the goal, and the fantasy. You need to create a goal that is so interesting and so compelling that the thought of it will make your journey easy and successful.

One of the first things we do in hypnotherapy is find out what it is specifically that you want and also how your life will be better once you have that. Then we create a visual and auditory symphony in your brain that the road to your goals seems effortless.

So if you are finding yourself struggling with any goal, whether it be dropping weight, excelling at a sport, feeling calm and relaxed, or becoming a non smoker, get back to the drawing board and focus on goals that will stimulate you to where it becomes so easy you will be amazed and delighted at how simple achieving your goal is. So if you are still bent on practicing will power, then use your will power to be creative and create a goal that will excite you. Without that, will power alone will make it a long and troublesome road ahead. With creativity AND willpower, now you are so set for success that people around you will drop their jaw at how easy you achieve the things that you want.

More myths about Hypnosis- fear of revealing secrets

The fear of revealing secrets falls under the umbrella of fear of loss of control. Many people find it challenging to relax when they are under the misconception that once they relax that the hypnotherapist is going to "get into their head" and make them say things they don't want to say or reveal secrets they don't want to. So the hypnotic induction lingers on and on and the client never really gets the benefit of hypnosis.

When you understand this basic presupposition about hypnosis you can enjoy it more fully and allow yourself the change you came for and deserve, it is this: You are always in control and you will not do anything that goes against your will, values or beliefs. This includes giving out any information you prefer to keep to yourself.

One of the great things about hypnosis is that we are outcome focused, so the dirt or secrets, for me personally, I don't really care about those anyway. I am going to focus on what you want. If there is something you need to let go of. (there always is) I will instruct your unconscious mind to do that without us even going into content. It is quite brilliant really, the way the unconscious mind works. I am interested in you feeling better and more relaxed and more effective in your life when you leave my office. I am not interested in your secrets anyway.

I love to compare hypnosis to meditation, because anyone who has ever really experienced the feeling in meditation, the state of hypnosis is very much like that. You should feel relaxed, rejuvinated and lighter after each hypnotherapy session.

Please feel free to e-mail me your questions about hypnosis as future topics of discussion.

Myths about Hypnosis- Loss of control

Most people, even ones who have actually been to a hypnotherapist don't really know what hypnosis is or why it works, how it works, and when to use it. This creates a big challenge. Like having an awesome tool in your tool box that does many things but having no idea what those things are. It is difficult for people to tap into the power of hypnosis when they are unsure what it is. Nowadays youtube and other videos showing and demonstrating stage hypnosis and hypnosis as gags and jokes really makes people more weary about it, unsure of it and leaving them to think of it as one of my college's first client's said when first asked what does he think about hypnosis, he said that he thought it was "hocus pocus". Funny, he thought that and yet was willing to be hypnotised anyway. I am going to be doing a series of topics related to what hypnosis is, what it is not, what it is used for and what it is not used for. Contrary to many web sites that list hypnosis as a remedy for everything under the sun. I tend to take a more moderate approach and use that tool when it is necessary and use something else when appropriate. My ultimate goal with my clients is giving them the change they ask for. If they can do that in a waking state, fine by me. If a trance state is better, fine by me too.

Part of the challenge with hypnotherapy is that many people learn the techniques to hypnotic inductions only, they don't really learn any therapy. I think it is very important to make sure you are in a trance state, after all that is the basis of hypnosis, being in an altered state of mind, however inducing trance is just the beginning. What you do when you are in a trance is really the meat and potatoes of the effectiveness of the "therapy".

Most clients are so busy "disbelieving" hypnosis that they don't allow themselves the benefit of change. A hypnotherapist is better off just talking to someone in the awake state and getting them results that way. That way they are not talking to themselves wondering if it is working. The thought of the hypnotherapist having a magic wand is widespread. When a client finds out that in fact they themselves are the ones making the change, they sometimes are very disillusioned by this and think, that hypnosis is not what they thought it was at all. And most likely they are correct.

So, with that long winded introduction, I am going to demystify the number one myth of hypnosis and that myth is "loss of control" One of the factors involved with someone who is in a hypnotic state is that they have bypassed the critical faculty of the mind. Now what does that mean in layman terms? That the part of their mind that cares to distinguish fantasy from reality is suspended. Just like when you are reading a book, watching a movie, dreaming, or goal planning. In all those cases, you know that what you are thinking is not actually real. You know in the movie Batman, that someone is not really flying through the air using their coat as wings. Although technologically possible with enough work, we do not question it, in order to enjoy the movie and suspend that critical faculty. Hypnosis works the same way.

Some people say that they cannot be hypnotised because they are a control freak. If you say this, then you are really bad at control. Because you must not be able to watch a movie or read a book, without having to be in control. Now there are good movies and there are bad movies, sometimes you are watching a movie and you think to yourself, wow this movie really sucks. The writer failed to get the storyline across to you. Same with hypnosis, once trance is elicited, it is the hypnotherapists job to take you on a wild ride that has a function of eliciting change.

My number one priority with my clients is finding out what they want. I want to know outcomes. Then we together can focus on getting to those outcomes however we see fit. In trance, out of trance, in then out of trance. Whatever works, if they get their outcome, I am happy.

So think about this, before you do self hypnosis, or go to a hypnotherapist, what is your outcome? What is it that you want? You will make each session a whole lot more enjoyable and successful if you are aware of your goals.

The hypnotic state is much like meditation, some people even say the only difference is the spelling. An interesting concept. If you come to a hypnotherapist with an outcome and are willing to suspend your critical faculty in order to elicit change, now you are on the right track of using this tool for success.

Hypnotherapy in the Wall Street Journal

I have always admired hypnotherapy for stress release, that is one of the fabulous things about hypnosis. If you don't think stress release is important, then think about the things that are stressing you out, money, kids, job, career.... what if you felt great about those things? That is what it feels like to be free of stress. It takes practice. Check out this article in the Wall Street Journal, of how a man helped his financial burden feel a lot less stressful.

Hypnosis Article

Enjoy the article, and let's lighten up a bit shall we?

Nancy

new book fascination.

I am very excited that Jerry and Esther Hicks have finally gotten a book on the best sellers list, in fact it was number 1 last time I check. I have created a few hypnosis videos and put them on youtube. Keep in mind these are for entertainment purposes. One of my videos is on the pendulum, it is not in anyway intended as a "how to" video or an "official" medical description of hypnosis (yawn) these are fun videos intended to entertain and to expand your mind into the world of hypnosis. Many people are unaware that they are IN CONTROL during hypnosis and that therapeutic hypnosis is outcome specific. Healing and refreshing, both at the same time. Enjoy the videos.

INTRODUCTION TO HYPNOSIS

HYPNOSIS WITH THE PENDULUM

Thoughts from beyond

So I am still right in the middle of listening to the youtube Teachings of Abraham. There are two different sets right now online that are 93 videos long and they are extremely fascinating. Although I get a glimpse and sort of understand how I create my own reality I am so fascinated by it, that I want to absorb it more and more on a daily basis. If you have not had a chance to check those videos out yet, I highly recommend doing so. They have been very interesting as I wash dishes and clean house and listen to how my thoughts create my Universe.

On another note, one of the many books I am currently reading is "The Power Of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. You can blame or thank Borders books whichever way you want to look at it. I am a member of their club and they have been sending me coupons for 25%-40% off every week, so I have been cruizing over there getting a book a week, so that is why I am currently involved with so many. Well here is my quote for the day from "The Power Of Now"

"I cannot live with myself any longer." This was the thought that kept repeating itself in my mind. Then suddenly I became aware of what a peculiar thought it was. "Am I one or two? If I cannot live with myself, there must be two of me: the 'I' and the 'self' that 'I' cannot live with." Well one of the books, which I have added to the sidebar for you to check out is another from Ester and Jerry Hicks "Ask and It is Given" it is more detail about how it is that we get what we get. I am so fascinated by it and also so dumbfounded that "we" sometimes think about what we want and then sometimes think about as the book says "the exact oposite" of what we want, and I thought about how ludicrious that is, think about it really, the fact that we think about exactly what we DO NOT want! Where did we learn this? How do we know to do that? And why is this so engrained in our brain that we would rather focus on things we do not want.

In an effort not to make myself crazy (haha, focusing on what I don't want huh?) I have decided to break this down and make conscious effort to notice when I am doing this and gently begin to steer my mind in a new direction. As I was reading this book, it really made me think of hypnosis. Because in hypnosis one of the things we do it bypass the critical faculty, which is effect really "the part of us" that tells us we cannot have what we want or how to focus on what we don't want. It is all based on our past live experiences and belief systems, but belief systems do not make something so, they only make us believe they are so. And so in hypnosis, we begin to install at the unconscious level new ways of thinking that are more useful. As I have mentioned, is it real or not real? I don't really care about that one way or the other. Is Ester REALLY channeling Abraham? Who cares. What I do know is that I find great value in what she is saying and it feels good to my spirit to take control of my life in this way and to slowly over time groom my thoughts towards the things that I want, and just live in bliss. Wow! Think about that, if we had a life free from drama. Most of us have had so much drama we don't even know what that would look or feel like. But you know that state of mind you are in when you are at the beach looking out on the ocean or deep into meditation or hypnosis and your mind is clear from all that chatter, I really want more of that, in the waking state. Really cool. Anyway, add this book to your list if you are interested in feeling good. I know I am and it is an amazing read.

If you like "The Secret"... you will love the Teachings of Abraham.

Now I watched the movie "The Secret" and I was always the most fascinated whenever Ester would speak. I never really did follow up on "The Teachings of Abraham" until lately, and now I am fascinated by it all. What hung me up at first was that she was receiving messages from a non physical being named Abraham. (I know sortof Close Encounters huh?) Like I said it hung me up to. But if you can pretend that either way that does not matter, what she (Abraham) really speaks about is very intense indeed. Here is an audio and a video clip from their web site introducing you to The Teachings of Abraham. It is really amazing, I will most likely be expanding more on this. We all know, what we focus on expands, blah, blah, blah... yet we keep focusing on what we don't what! Why do we do that? If I were to ask Abraham a question, and I just might go to the workshop to do so. I would what to know, why do we do that? Or how do we know to focus on what we don't want? So much so that what we do want takes a very, very, long time, it seems to manifest. Well, enough outer space talk for today, but here are the links, and one of the books I am reading, I have posted on the side bar, you can order it and start spacing out too. (no pot needed) I listened to the audio first and it made the video more intense. Please let me know your thoughts. We all have a laundry list of outcomes. Lose 10 pounds, get rid of the flabby underarms, and stop yelling and husband and kids. (You do that?) The laundry list goes on. But the question is; what are you doing about it? And the next question is what are you willing to do about it. See writing down your goals and then praying and/or dreaming about them at night is a good start. But, if you really want to lose 10 pounds (or whatever) and tighten up those abs, you will at some point actually have to do something about it.

I have a delightful saying that my Mom used to use when I was a child growing up it goes like this… “Wish in one hand, and spit in the other, and see which one fills up faster”. Oh, your Mom used that too huh? I actually tried it one time, not only was it distracting to wish and spit and the same time, I never did manifest the toys on my mind into the palm of my hand. It was only after hours of babysitting, and painstakingly saving my money and not buying Now and Laters every day after school, that I actually had enough money for what I wanted, but even then, I had to ask my Mom to take me to the store, then I had to go pick it out, then pick a color, then we had to go wait in a line, then I had to part with my “hard earned” money, and finally, yes finally I had my toy. So it was a process that was planned, saved for and took time to actually achieve.

OK, so what is my point this week? Well, I think you know what it is, yep, it has to do with us and our exercise and nutrition programs. How we get distracted one day and throw our hands up in despair and say, oh well, forget it, I guess I am just big boned anyway. Or, eh, I didn’t really want to feel better, breath easier, have more energy, be physically more fit, and feel awesome about myself. I am doing ok the way I am. So, we rationalize, and our desires get stuffed down to the bottom of the basement to be replaced with monotonous repetitive mediocrity. BLECH!!! Just thinking about that option makes me cringe.

So what is it that stops us from getting what we want? It is exactly this…. Sour grapes. You know, you reach for the grapes reach for the grapes, can’t reach, can’t reach, no ladder….. Forget it; those grapes were probably sour anyway. The fact of the matter is those grapes are not sour. Any idea presented to you in the form of a wish, or a desire or a goal, is worthy of your attention and worthy of you letting go of the excuses and getting down to business and getting those goals achieved.

The reason we all are struggling so much is that we are working with our “will power” which is only approximately 10 percent of our mind power. The other 90 percent, plus or minus a bit, is running on automatic, and it actually takes work to make a change, this is our subconscious mind. It takes in information and learns things, and things become known and they become good, things we do not know, become bad. We only have two feelings to be very crude about it, and they are good or bad. We are either feeling good, or feeling bad or some sort of combination of the two. When we want something, to get fit, get in shape, eat healthy, or whatever the goal and we do behaviors that are contrary to that, there is a little voice inside our head, but we usually stuff it down, and that is where the rationalizing comes in. I will start my diet tomorrow… It is just one bite… I don’t feel like getting on the treadmill, I think I hurt my back or something. Now these little voices have to be louder than the voices in our head saying that we want a certain thing. The truth of the matter is very simple. We have to just get up, stop making excuses and go do it. We have to a first just actually put the fork down and push ourselves away from the table. We have to keep the fridge closed. We have to consciously make an effort and not give in to our automatic habits. That is why there is so much business about taking 21 or 31 or 14 or whatever days to make a new habit, because we are in a trance. That’s right we are in hypnosis, a trance that is autopilot and it is not in the benefit of our higher good or our best interests. We have to go in there and deprogram our minds, and condition them for success. We have to realize, we are not big boned, it is not ok to achieve mediocrity and we can be successful and feel great and have a wonderful life. We deserve it as much as the next person. Consciously we know this, but in the subconscious is that voice that says, see I knew you couldn’t do it, you are fat, you have always been fat and always will be. Those are huge obstacles to overcome, our own limited thinking and programming.

What ever it is you need to do, you already know what that is, take a moment right now, and stop. Get a piece of paper and a writing utensil and write down the first three things that come to your mind as to what you need to do in order to achieve your goals. You already know what they are you were thinking them as you were reading. You were saying, yeah I should call Amanda and we can start running in the mornings, she has been asking me to run with her. Or maybe you got a flyer from work for an early morning boot camp that fits perfectly into your schedule. Whatever it is for you right now, write them down… go ahead.

1.__________________________________________________________________
2.__________________________________________________________________
3.__________________________________________________________________

Now, don’t you feel better? You have taken the first step. Now, regarding one of those items, right now, not later but now, make it happen, take a step in the direction of your goals. Homeostasis is also known as a set point. It loves to maintain a certain temperature, a certain weight, a certain level of body water and other physiological elements. We all know this, we use this to battle fat loss by getting the body to respond by mixing things up, increasing and decreasing calories from day to day, doing interval training as well as mixing up our workouts every four weeks or so.

Well, in addition to the body loving homeostasis, the mind loves it as well. Hmmm, this should be interesting, whatever do you mean Nancy? Well, let me explain. For the most part, we carry with us the same personality, the same character traits, the same tendencies, and behaviors as well. For the most part, our behaviors, beliefs, attitudes and ways of life are also in homeostasis. We are pretty predicable in our behaviors. So what does this mean? This means that we cannot say in our mind one time “I want to lose 10 pounds” and magically it will happen. We have to put consistent effort into making this a reality. That is why you hear so many people belly aching about their diets not working or their exercise program not working, it is not that it does not work; it is simply that the program was not given enough time.

I have seen many diet programs, online and otherwise, I have seen many training programs as well. The reality is they pretty much ALL work, if you stick to it. Now I have to admit some theories are better than others, and my opinion about healthy eating is very different from the next person’s. Our own personal goals will determine what type of program we seek out and manifest into our lives. I am very grateful for all the different types of programs out there, because there are as many different types of programs as there are different types of people and most nutrition and exercise experts know the basic fundamental truths to exercise and nutrition, so the reality is, they should all in effect, work. So the bummer for those of us that are seeking change, it that it is not up to the fitness professional, it is up to us. I know, it sucks doesn’t it? We are in fact responsible for our own behaviors and we are responsible for our own thoughts and if a program does not work, it is no-ones fault but our own. Now a nutrition or fitness expert can certainly help facilitate change, and that is a very key word, facilitate, but ultimately we are in charge of keeping the dream alive, and moving above and beyond our current homeostasis to new and better levels.

So before I continue, I have a question for you. Are you ready to move above and beyond your current fitness level? Are you ready to dedicate with 100% commitment and passion to achieving this new objective? Are you ready to drop the excuses and start making the things you want, actually happen for yourself in your life? Yes? Are you sure? Ok, then read on to the 5 steps for breaking free from mental as well as physical homeostasis.

5 STEPS FOR BREAKING FREE FROM HOMEOSTASIS

1. Awareness of Homeostasis: The first step is to be aware of our mental homeostasis, as well as physical homeostasis. Any change that is suggested to the mind is going to be met with violent opposition. Becoming aware of this truth makes it easy then for us to actually make change happen in our lives. Instead of becoming frustrated after 4 minutes of making a decision, realize it is going to take time to integrate your new beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes. Be patient with yourself.

2. Make A Decision on a New Behavior: Ok this seems really easy, but in fact for the most part most of us decide we are going to start working out, eat completely healthy, stop smoking, stop drinking, stop cussing, and anything else we can throw in the mix. Here is my suggestion, when I am working with clients either online or in person, I always start with the most important part first. I always get them either exercising correctly or eating correctly, I never try to do both at once. We will tackle these challenges one at a time. The funny thing is, once you start working out, you just naturally want to eat better, and once you are eating better you will want to start to workout. Save the stopping smoking for another day, because you will naturally want to do that as well. Create a goal for yourself. Of course write it down. No really, write it down now… I’ll wait. Now you will begin to create new mental activates that will push you towards this goal.

3. Create New Mental Activities: Whenever I want to make a change, I send a message to my subconscious mind, a symbol if you will of my intention to make a change. That symbol comes in the form of some actual mental activity that represents my intended change. There is a big difference between wishing and wanting to change and actually making a change happen, that difference comes in the form of action. We must take actions in order to over ride our current homeostasis and create a new “set point” When we are not yet ready in the physical realm to achieve our objectives we can achieve them in our mental world. This is the reason I tell my hypnosis clients to listen to hypnosis EVERY night. To create this new mental reality that will just blast itself very easily into the physical reality, if practiced on a daily basis. So here is what you do, create some sort of daily mental ritual for yourself, that is a symbol to your subconscious mind of your intention to create new behaviors and make change. You can make an audio session of affirmations, you can write down affirmations and read them out loud, you can practice for 3 minutes a night mental imagery of your goal. You can light a candle every night and say out loud, “I intend…..” and fill in the blank. Whatever the activity is not as important as the ritual of it and you state in your mind your intention to achieve what you have written down in step 2.

4. Create New Physical Activities: Now it is time to bring your metal world into the physical world. Begin to incorporate your ideas and mental activities into the real world. Create a system of consistency that will allow you to create a new “set point” This in part will automatically happen when you start to practice your mental exercises; you will receive inspired ideas from your unconscious mind of new actions to take. Listen to that part of you, this is very important for you following through and breaking free from homeostasis.

5. Persist With Passion: Never, never, never, give up. It always amazes me our mental mind set when we have a bad day or “fall of the wagon” so to speak, we miss a workout or our eating is not so good that day, and then the attitude is like, oh screw it, I give up, I am just not going to do a new program at all. Understand this is just your body fighting to get back to homeostasis. You have a few good days of eating, some AWESOME workouts and your body says, hey wait a minute, we haven’t had enough couch time this week. Or what about our weekly dosage of potato chips? Your body and your mind will fight you, and that is why at first you MUST fight back. It is like taming the tiger.

I could repeat number 5 to be also number 6, 7, 8, and 9. It is really that important. Nothing important or of value was ever achieved easily. Now you can make it an easy process, but commitment and dedication MUST be present for you to be successful. That commitment and dedication, starts in the mind. Increase your mental game, and your body will follow pursuit.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Nancy

Persisit With Passion

PERSIST WITH PASSION
Focus on Fitness Excellence

The flavor of the month is PERSISTENCE!!!! I have come in contact with this much needed resource quite frequently in my own life in my training as well as personal life. You know what I mean. You start a new program a few weeks later you look in the mirror and things seem to look the same, and so you say to yourself, what's the use, what's the point, I may as well just quit, nothing is happening. Then you keep at it for just another week or two and miraculously major shifts happen and you forget you were even belly aching about it in the first place. Yes, I know the feeling and I know the thoughts running through your head, they are the same thoughts we all have, why bother if nothing is happening? Believe me, something is happening, and the first thing that shifts is a change in your mentality where this healthy lifestyle is the exception and not the rule in the first place.

What if instead we had a major overhaul in our perceptions, practiced daily affirmations to acknowledge our goals and visions and kept repeating them over and over. Of course, we all know the outcome; eventually we will rediscover electricity right? Yes, exactly!!!! So my message to you this week is this:

If you are feeling a little down, or a little discouraged about your program, just give it one more week, stick to it, and remain free from emotions and checking the scale. Write down two affirmations that you want to be true for yourself and repeat those in your head over and over. I don't mean stuff like "I now weigh 100 pounds" I mean stuff that you can actually believe. "everyday, I am getting closer and closer to my goal" or "every good meal is one step closer to my goal" or how about "I love the way exercise makes me feel when I am done" (haha don't we all?) try on a few affirmations, play around with them, have fun with them and see how your life will do a complete turn around.

OK, sounds easy enough right? But how do we go about doing this specifically, how do we persist with passion, when things just seem to be going all wrong, or nothing is happening at all? In addition to the above mentioned techniques, begin to focus on mini goals. You have a big goal in mind no doubt. That is the main challenge in the first place, looking at this huge goal and wondering how in the world you are going to obtain it. First off, start by chunking your goal down into little mini goals. Make part of those mini goals daily successes. When we focus on the process and let go of the outcome, things just seem to move along effortlessly and all of the sudden you look in the mirror and to your surprise you have surpassed your goals. The trick is to get out of your head, and into your heart. Stop analyzing and beating yourself up for little tiny slip ups or missed workouts. Focus on the successes. Give yourself pats on the back after each successful workout and each successful weight training session. Think of it like an artist who is painting a beautiful painting. They enjoy no doubt looking at their gorgeous finished painting, but they also enjoy the process of selecting the paint colors, deciding on what to paint, sketching it out on paper, and getting involved in the process so intently. When we get involved in the process, the outcome seems to just magically happen. Let go of the main objective, and enjoy the process. For one thing, workouts are so much better when you have actually enjoyed them.

You no doubt have heard of the saying “fake it until you make it” right? How many times in your life have you dreaded brushing your teeth? Personally I have had a few of those experiences but not too many, for the most part; I just wake up, brush my teeth and go about my business. It is a habit, so ingrained that I just don’t think about how I feel about it at all. So, we can use this trick when it comes to getting to our outcomes with our fitness goals. People often ask me, how do I continue to exercise on a consistent basis, and usually what they tell me is that they don’t feel like doing it. In turn I say, well, I don’t think about how I feel about it, I just put on my tennis shoes and go. This is obviously a process, but through our positive affirmations, and practicing taking action, regardless of feeling and separating ourselves from how we feel. Once we actually get into the gym and are in the “zone” then we can clearly see our vision, and start to really create that vision of what we want for ourselves. Seeing the positive, focusing on the positive and using those affirmations to solidify that we will not take no for an answer and we refuse to quit until our outcome is achieved! We refuse to give up, or give in to a bad day or a bad situation. We stay the course, as wobbly as it may seem, at first, until we can just put on the cruise control and put on the auto pilot.

So let’s recap:

Create positive affirmations for yourself: Personally I have many affirmations set up on an audio mp3 and I listen to that first thing in the morning. You can have them written on paper and read them out loud or in your head.

Separate feelings from action: Set up a game plan for nutrition and exercise, and follow it, no matter how you feel, in fact, just separate your feelings all together, just think of it like you are brushing your teeth.

Chuck size: If you start to get too emotional, create smaller chunk size goals, little mini goals to create successes for you along the way

Visualize you goals: Once you have done all of the above, then you can really focus on the big picture your big goals. I like to do this when I am doing cardio, it really gets me fired up. Put on some awesome music and just have a blast in my head.

Remember you are the only one who thinks in your mind, and you have the freedom and choice to think whatever thoughts you want. Sometimes it actually seems difficult at first to think positive thoughts, but starting off with your affirmations, and following the steps, you will be on your way to achieving fitness excellence, and achieving all your goals and desires.

How do we use hypnosis to achieve our fitness goals?

As I mentioned in my last post the unconscious mind likes to serve. So who specifically does it serve? Why you of course? Whatever it is that you want, your unconscious mind will produce for you, no questions asked. Now the problem is that most of the things we want are actually presented to the unconscious mind in the form of something that we don't want, hence the never ending cycle of not being able to get out of a situation.

The great thing about knowing this, is that you can begin to "consciously" focus your efforts on your messages to your "unconscious" through repetitive affirmations and statements that you desire to be true about yourself, thus eventually making it easy for these things to come to pass. Another method is to practice hypnosis daily. I personally practice hypnosis morning and night. I use that time to align my unconscious mind with my conscious mind so that I am in harmony to produce the results that I want. The only trick to this is just stating what it is specifically that you DO want (state goals in the positive) and then present it to your unconscious mind for a solution to how it will go about manifesting your stated desire into reality. The other great thing about the unconscious mind, because it thinks in gestalts it can be presented with a problem and come up with a solution in full, sometimes (many times actually) without you even being consciously aware of it. For example have you ever said to someone "let me sleep on it?" that is a great way to allow your unconscious mind to align with that and see if it is the correct way to go.

Now if you are going to be practicing hypnosis on a daily basis, you need to have some sort of method to do this by, you can get a book on self hypnosis and actually make a CD for yourself and listen to your affirmations each night as you align with them. Listening to your own voice is an awesome way to get in alignment with your outcomes. Believe me, I listen to quite a few of my own sessions and I trance right out. I forget completely that it is my own voice. Another way is to go see a hypnotherapist in person and they can do sessions with you. A third way which has become very popular is to purchase MP3's and Cd's online. I have personally bought MP3's online for areas that I want to focus on and I have found it quite valuable. Now there are a few tricks to finding good hypnosis Cd's and MP3's and I will share a few with you.

First of all make sure you like the person's voice. If you came from London and there was a hypnotherapist with a British accent, it quite possibly could send you into a deep state very easily, however if you have somehow created some sort of aversion to British accents, I say you are in for a rocky session. So if the web site offers many programs, maybe buy just one to start out and make sure you like their voice and that the session is enjoyable for you. The second thing to consider is that all sessions are NOT created equal. The best bet for you is to order products from someone who specializes in the area you want to focus on as well as employs a variety of hypnosis techniques as well as other modalities. And the final piece of advice is for me to be redundant, (since the unconscious mind loves repetition) and tell you to practice daily. There are a variety of ways for you to do this presented here. As they say, practice makes perfect, this goes for your mind as well as your body. Practicing hypnosis daily will insure integration of your outcomes between both your conscious and unconscious mind.

What is Hypnosis part 2

So what is the difference between the conscious and unconscious mind. Think of it like this: the conscious mind is left brain, conscious means awareness. When you are conscious you are aware of something right? You know it and you are aware of it. You take information received from your sense organs and make decision, from judgements and think. You conscious mind analyzes, evaluates and reasons as well as makes comparisons. You conscious mind allows you to make decisions and exercise the power of choice. It gives you the ability to select and discriminate between what is desirable and what is not. It then presents this information to the unconscious mind to store in its memory banks.

So what is the unconscious mind like? Well that is the right brain thinking. Your unconscious mind consists of associated sense impressions and memories of all your past events. It is composed of your brain, spinal cord and a network of nerves that branch out through your entire body. Every single bodily activity is controlled by the unconscious mind. Unconscious communication goes on day and night whether you are awake or asleep. Your unconscious mind is dominant when you sleep, but it is always active. Now not only are the memories of your every experience stored in your unconscious mind, but also your emotions associated with those memories, and... Your unconscious mind, remembers EVERYTHING! The unconscious mind is a problem solver, it is known as the seat of your dreams. The unconscious minds prime directive is to preserve the body, it thinks is symbols, functions as a gestalt, does not process negatives, is the domain of the emotions and enjoys to serve.

Now really I could go on for hours and hours, but the basic premise is that we use 10% of our minds right? Well the 90% of untapped mental powers is that of our unconscious minds. So knowing this what do we do with all of this information? Well, that depends.... depends on what you say, depends on what you want. What is your outcome. If you are functioning to your satisfaction then fine keep on doing what you are doing. But however if you have areas you are not so successful with or even areas you are successful with and you want to be excellent, there is no better way than to tap into the resources of the unconscious mind.

There is a story about a man who went to see the late Dr. Milton Erickson, the master of hypnosis and metaphors, in fact it was due to Erickson's efforts that hypnosis was accepted by the American Medical Association in 1958. Now this man went to see Erickson for some time with a particular problem, after a while he stopped seeing him. A friend of his met him while he was out and about one day and asked how he was, he said FANTASTIC!! And he said how is that problem of yours that you were having, he said, what problem, oh yeah that... oh that is totally gone, my life is fantastic. He said well how was the hypnosis did it help, he said, not really, all he did was tell me stories. What a great example of how the unconscious mind thinks.

Next up: How to use hypnosis to achieve your outcomes.

References: The Wizard Within- AM Krazner

So... What is Hypnosis?

Many people are unsure what hypnotherapy really is. In fact when I first became certifiied in hypnotherapy, I was pretty unsure myself. The common falacy that a hypnotherapist can "change" someone magically overnight or has some sort of control over the person is nothing short of craziness.

So what really is hypnosis? First of all, all hypnosis is self hypnosis, so what does that mean in layman's terms. You will not "go into a trance" if you do not want to. You will not go into a corner and stand on your head, unless that is something that interests you. So if you are only going to do, what you would do in the first place, what is the use of hypnosis you ask? Well, that is very good question. You see the unconscious mind thinks in metaphors, and thinks in gestalts, it has the blueprint for us, for perfect health, for our life's mission, for achieving yearly goals, and it's prime directive is to protect the body.

Don't believe me? Think about this, did you sleep ok last night? You did? Wow, how did you remember to breath? How did you pump the blood through your veins, how did your body heal and rest and feel refreshed in the morning? OH, now you are starting to get it. That's right the unconscious mind did all of that for you. So now that you know this, what do you do with this information? Well, think about this for a moment, it is our conscious mind that we use most often in our waking state, now much of the time our conscious mind is very successful at carrying out the prime directives of the unconscious mind. However where we get into a bit of trouble is with our belief systems. For example, the unconscious mind wants you to stay healthy, but you went to the doctor and he "programmed" you to beleive that since heart conditions "run" in your family, that you MIGHT, get a heart attack, later on in life and so be careful, NOT to go overboard, and more of what not to do, and more of what not to do. Now, the doctor's intentions are all well and good, but your unconscious mind does not know the difference between a negative suggestion or a positive suggestion, so the unconscious mind, which takes orders from the conscious mind says, oh the doctor says I am going to get a heart condition when I am 56. And walla magically you create a heart condition and the doctor was right.

Now, I know that this is a lot for you to digest in one session, especially when using such an intense example for most people. If you want me to chunk it down, think about when your mother told you, don't spill the milk... what did you usually do? That's right, spill the milk! That is how the unconscious mind thinks. It cannot process negatives.

I will let you ponder this over and we will discuss in the my next entry how we get congruence. How do we go from what we want, to getting that? How do we filter out all of these negative suggestions without going crazy???? AHha, relax stay turned and I will tell you...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nancygeorges.blogspot.com/2007/04/so-what-is-hypnosis.html' title='So...
